Kwan Chong Biography
Kwan Chong is a third generation acupuncturist and holistic healer. After apprenticing under distinguished grandmasters from Korea, China, and Japan, Kwan Chong (L.Ac, Dip.Ac) has served Illinois as a licensed acupuncturist for the last 16 years—as long as acupuncture law has been enacted in the state, and before its three acupuncture colleges were established in Illinois. He even updated most of traditional herbal formulas to meet the changed condition of modern day life style, physical composition and diet of each individuals through many years of research and clinical practice. It is another beautiful accomplishment!
An unique aspect of Chong’s practice is his pursuit of the holistic well being of his patients. As a Tae Kwon Do black belt and Yoga practitioner for over 35 years, Chong is a big believer in preventative medicine and stresses the importance of keeping one’s mind, body, and emotional state in good balance. Chong works not only to alleviate symptoms, but also to heal the root of the patient’s condition. This comprehensive healing philosophy is apparent in all of his acupuncture sessions, which take into account the entire patient’s person.
Though rich in history, acupuncture is still a growing medical practice. In order to keep up with the latest skills and techniques in Eastern medicine and contribute to interdisciplinary dialogue, Chong regularly attends conferences and has given lectures to various groups in the U.S. and abroad. Never complacent and always questioning, Chong approaches the practice as a healing artist whose commitment to healing continually brings new challenges and achievements.
Chong received a call to healing when he was 16 years old. Ever since, any study and discipline he had engaged in was related to healing. Though there are accumulated family traditions and inspirations, he has expanded his learning as an apprentice to
Dr. Yongseop Oh who was the president of Korean acupuncture association in Korea, and Dr.Keychun Song who was an Eastern Medicine doctor(western pharmacist and 9th degree Kung-Fu grandmaster), and Dr. Cheol Hong who majored in Eastern and Western Medicine together in China. All of his teachers were exceptionally wonderful acupuncturists and healers. Chong majored in environmental engineering in his undergraduate degree and was given many prestigious as well as street smart learning opportunities in deepening his holistic healing art. He can use short needle and long needle as freely as he want(.01 inch to 1 foot) and anything he holds or even his empty hands can become heeling equipment to best fit the needs of the patient. While he has studied acupuncture traditional one to one apprenticeship style(Dip.Ac, LAc), his quest for the study of mind and spirit continued in his getting MDiv and MTS from Garrett Seminary on Northwestern University campus in Evanston, and PhD course work, CPEC, CMFT from joint adventure of Alexian Medical Center and Graduate Theological Foundation. He thanks God for giving him the rare and exceptional opportunities.
